Sometimes called the Pompeii of the New World, St. Pierre is 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Fort-de-France. Amid this active tropical town are the ruins of the old St. Pierre, which was destroyed by the eruption of Mont Pelée. Now dormant, the volcano roared into life on May 8, 1902, annihilating all but one of St. Pierre's 30,000 inhabitants—a local drunk imprisoned in the basement of the jail.
